Medievalists and Classicists in Conversation: Epic

The Society is pleased to be able to record the success of its new initiative intended to build on the close links and shared interests which exist between medievalists and classicists. The Society is sponsoring 'Conversations' at which the two communities can explore together a theme of mutual interest. The first of these conversations took place on 10th March 2012 at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. It was jointly hosted with the Corpus Centre for the Study of Greek and Roman Antiquity and its theme was Epic.

The intention of these day events is to focus on discussion rather than extended presentations, and we were delighted to have a series of contributors who filled the brief of providing short papers intended to help open up the conversation. The subjects covered included 'heroism' and 'other worlds' and contributions ranged from ancient Rome to early sixteenth-century Scotland, via medieval France and Italy. These papers encouraged a stimulating discussion with a lively exchange of views between disciplines.
